Strijd tegen onzichtbaarheid

Wij zijn Braziliaanse jongeren die op zoek zijn naar een nieuwe kans, wij doen ons best om ons aan te passen aan de Nederlandse normen en waarden. Wij gaan hier naar school en hebben zowat hetzelfde leven als een regulier Nederlands kind. Wij voelen ons Nederlanders en zijn blij en trots dat we een leven hebben in dit land. Maaaaarrrrr, we hebben een klein probleempje. Wij wonen hier niet op reguliere wijze, wij zijn hier als het ware onzichtbaar en dat is niet altijd leuk.

Zoals we al zeiden zijn we soort van onzichtbaar: wij wonen hier wel en leiden ons leven hier, maar niemand weet dat we er werkelijk zijn. Het begint meestal bij de ouders, die naar Nederland komen voor werk en/of een betere toekomst voor overige familie of kinderen. In Brazilië is het namelijk niet heel fijn, de veiligheid is veel minder en het onderwijs is slechter en duurder. Veel ouders weten dat ze ondanks de hele situatie, toch hier een beter leven kunnen leiden.

Wij mogen na onze 18e verjaardag niet meer doorstuderen. Voor een studie moet je meestal stage lopen, maar veel bedrijven willen ons niet aannemen. Wij mogen ook vaak niet mee met schoolreisjes.

Wij hebben geen toegang tot zorg, dat is soms wel lastig. Stel je bent heel erg ziek of je moet een operatie ondergaan, dan kunnen we dat niet zomaar doen.

Daarom willen wij het recht om door te studeren na onze 18e verjaardag, en we willen toegang tot zorg hebben.

Het is heel erg belangrijk voor ons. Wij willen op deze manier ons verhaal vertellen en laten merken dat wij hier ook zijn, wij willen niet meer onzichtbaar zijn, wij willen zichtbaar worden! Als er nu niks gebeurt, kunnen wij niet aan onze toekomst werken. Bovendien is bekend dat wanneer een toekomstperspectief ontbreekt misstanden als uitbuiting, woonfraude, verkapte slavernij en mishandeling vaker voor komen bij een leven onder de radar. Dat moet je als samenleving niet willen.Teken daarom deze petitie en steun ons in deze strijd!

We are Brazilian young people looking for a new opportunity. We do our best to adapt to Dutch norms and values. We go to school here and we live the same life as our Dutch classmates. We feel Dutch and we’re happy and proud to be part of this country. Buuuuuttt, we have one small problem: we do not, officially, live here. We are, as it were, invisible. And that’s not a great position to be in…

As we said, we are kind of invisible: we live here, and our lives are here, but still nobody knows that we really exist. This usually starts with our parents, who come to the Netherlands to work and build a better future for their children. Life in Brazil is difficult: it’s much less safe, the education is worse, and lots of people can’t afford to study. Many parents know they can make a better life in the Netherlands.

We aren’t allowed to continue studying beyond our 18th birthdays. At school, we’re often expected to do an internship - but most companies don’t want to hire us. Often we’re not allowed to go on school trips.

We don’t have access to healthcare either, which can be really difficult. If you’re very ill or have to undergo surgery, you can’t do it just like that..

That is why we want the right to continue studying beyond our 18th birthdays, and we want to have access to healthcare.

It is very important to us. We want to tell our story and show that we are here too; we no longer want to be invisible, we want to be seen! If nothing happens now, we cannot work on our future. And when you live under the radar, with no prospect of a future, exploitation, abuse, housing fraud, modern slavery become much more common. As a society we shouldn’t want that.
