Stop het leed in Gaza
English below. Deze petitie is onderdeel van een billboardcampagne op de A12 bij Den Haag in de week van 18 augustus. De petitie en campagne zijn beide een burgerinitiatief.
Nederland doet niet genoeg om het lijden in Gaza te stoppen. Het uitblijven van actie maakt de Nederlandse burger machteloos.
Al in mei vond 62% van de Nederlanders dat het kabinet harder moet optreden tegen Israël. Die meerderheid groeit — maar de politiek blijft achter. Dit bleek des te meer uit het debat op 7 augustus.
Het is goed dat er maatregelen worden genomen. Maar ze zijn onvoldoende om het leed van de bevolking in Gaza te stoppen.
Nederland kan méér doen. Nederland móét meer doen.
Als belangrijke handelspartner en wereldwijd de grootste investeerder in Israël, heeft Nederland naast de verplichting ook de macht om in te grijpen. Een greep uit mogelijke stappen:
- Openlijk kritiek uiten op personen, staten, en instanties, die direct of indirect het leed in Gaza veroorzaken of in stand houden. Denk hierbij aan (bevriende) landen die wapens leveren, of aan de weigering van de EU om sancties in te stellen.
- Het voorbeeld volgen van en coalities vormen met staten als Ierland en Spanje die concrete stappen (willen) nemen om het leed in Gaza tegen te gaan.
- Het ontmoedigen van investeringen door bedrijven die profiteren van de oorlogseconomie (zie de petitie van DeGoedeZaak, SOMO en The Rights Forum) - én als overheid geen producten of diensten inkopen van deze bedrijven of uit Israël zelf.
- Het sterk uitbreiden van financiële steun aan professionele en onpartijdige hulporganisaties om voedsel, medicijnen, en hulp te leveren - én het actief bepleiten van hun onbeperkte toegang tot Gaza.
- Het ondersteunen en publiekelijk verdedigen van internationale strafrechtelijke onderzoeken en mechanismen.
De Nederlandse burger moet serieus genomen worden. Dat betekent dat de politiek alles in het werk moet stellen om het leed in Gaza te stoppen.

This petition is part of a citizen-led billboard campaign on the A12 near The Hague, running the week of August 18.
The suffering in Gaza is unbearable — and the Netherlands is not doing enough to stop it. Inaction leaves Dutch citizens powerless while lives in Gaza are being destroyed.
Already in May, 62% of Dutch people believed the government should take a stronger stance against Israel. That majority is growing — but political leaders are lagging behind. This became even more apparent during the debate on 7 August.
Measures that have already be taken may help, but they are not enough to end the suffering of the people in Gaza.
The Netherlands can do more. The Netherlands must do more.
As a major trading partner and the world’s largest investor in Israel, the Netherlands has not only a moral duty, but the leverage to press for change. Possible actions include:
- Publicly criticizing individuals, states, and institutions that directly or indirectly cause or sustain the suffering in Gaza. This includes arms-supplying allies and the EU’s refusal to impose sanctions.
- Following the example of, and forming coalitions with, countries such as Ireland and Spain that are (seeking to) take concrete steps to counter the suffering in Gaza.
- Discouraging investments by companies that benefit from the war economy (see the petition by DeGoedeZaak, SOMO, and The Rights Forum) — and, as a government, stop buying their products or services, including from Israel itself.
- Significantly increasing financial support to professional and impartial aid organizations to provide food, medicine, and assistance — and actively advocating for their unrestricted access to Gaza.
- Supporting and publicly defending international criminal investigations and mechanisms.
The Dutch people must be heard. The government must use every tool it has to stop the suffering in Gaza.
